WCA Convention & Tradeshow Education Offerings
WCA’s educational offerings add to the value of attending the WCA’s Convention and Tradeshow, the largest and longest running regional carwash tradeshow in the country.
Kicking off the event on Monday, October 11, WCA is bringing back the Disney Institute to provide the opening keynote presentation “Disney’s Approach to Leadership Excellence.” Known for their excellent and engaging presentations, Disney will help carwash owners develop and implement their own vision, goals and action plan; communicate that vision to inspire team action; identify team leaders; help company to take a proactive approach toward change.
Following the opening presentation, two tracks of workshops will be launched: The Conveyor Track will host workshops on: Labor Issues – presented by the California Division of Labor and Standards Enforcement ; Tweet Your Wash - Social Media's Role in the Carwash Industry which a panel discussion with Ryan Carlson, Washcard Systems, Randy Cressall, National Carwash Marketing Association, moderated by Brad Hooper, Rossmoor CarWash; Labor Laws - And What You Should Know – Gary Bethel, Littler Mendelson.
Simultaneous to the Conveyor Track, the Self-Serve Track, or Bootcamp will host the following workshops: Energy Efficiency, Utilities, Boilers, Underfloor Heat by Shane Wells, Hi Performance; Credit Card Vending – Ryan Carlson, Wash Card Systems; Video Surveillance – Rick Diehl, Turbo Wash DVR; Pump Maintenance – Vernon Larson, Cat Pumps, and a Self -Serve Issues Open Forum – with a panel consisting of Bob Cavalieri, Clearwater Car Wash , Scott Grey, Soapys, Jerry Nix, Speedi Car Wash , Rick Diehl, Turbo Wash and Doug Christ, Eagle Investments.
On Tuesday, October 12, after an Industry Awards Recognition and Business Update Breakfast, the opening general session “Turn Survive into Thrive” will be presented by Jim Rees, Chairman of the Nevada Restaurant Association and COO/Partner RUN Restaurants LLC. Rees is a 30-year restaurant veteran who has not only survived, but has thrived during this economy - opening up two new Hash House a Go Go restaurants during the economic meltdown.
The Western Carwash Association tradeshow, runs from 11:00am to 6:00pm on Tuesday, October 12 and 9:00am to 1:00pm on Wednesday, October 13. WCA will present a series of “Nuts and Bolts” short courses for full-serve and self-serve operators in a special classroom located on the show floor. These courses include: Mobil Messaging – Nick Mallo, Textmunications; Valuing Your Carwash – Roger Pencek, Carwash Brokers; Efficient Lighting – Scott Grey, Soapy's Auto Wash; Create Loyalty Through Innovative Customer Service – Jeff Coplin, Matt & Jeff's Hand Car Wash.
Two additional educational offerings will happen on the tradeshow floor at the WCA Convention and Tradeshow. The first are demonstrations for detail products/techniques. These 20 minute actual demonstrations are sponsored by International Detailing Association and will include hands-on and Q & A for all products/techniques by various manufacturers.
WCA affinity partners will also be available for one-on-one consultations on topics such as insurance, labor, human resources, marketing, social networking, bankcard, business practices and more. Be sure to visit the WCA membership area to set up these appointments.

2010 Industry Awards
WCA will recognize the following five categories this year:
Hall of Fame Car Wash Manager of the Year Distinguished Service Community Service Award John M. Shea Memorial Award
We need your help! The Awards Committee is seeking candidate nominations from our membership. A brief description of each award is available by clicking here. We ask that you send your nomination to the WCA office no later than August 1st, 2010. A member may nominate more than one individual for any award.
As an added incentive, an individual who has their candidate chosen in any one of the five categories will receive a complimentary full registration to the WCA Annual Trade Show in Las Vegas, October 11-13, 2010.
Thank you in advance for your candidate recommendations as this enables us to recognize our car wash industry leaders and to give them the praise and recognition they deserve.

Award Descriptions
HALL OF FAME AWARD: This is our most prestigious award. The Hall of Fame Award recognizes the outstanding dedication of the WCA member, either in the operation of his/her business or in service to the Car Wash Industry. The recipient shall have given unselfishly to of his/her time and energy to further the goals of the WCA to improve the Car Wash Industry.
The recipient should have demonstrated these qualities for a number of years and must have been a WCA member, but he/she does not necessarily have to be currently active.
CAR WASH MANAGER OF THE YEAR: This award will be presented to one or more individuals by the discretion of the Awards Committee. This award can be determined by length of service on the job, their ability to implement good sound business ideas or practices for their employer, and their loyalty and dedication of professional business standards in conjunction with the goals and mission of your organization.
The recipient is required to be presently employed by a current car wash owner member in good standing of the WCA.
DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD: This award shall be presented to individuals or to organizations selected by the Awards Committee for their outstanding service to the WCA or the Car Wash Industry. They must strongly support the WCA and/or have made an exceptional contribution to the industry.
The recipient must be a WCA member in good standing. One or more awards may be presented annually in this category.
COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD: This award shall be presented in recognition of outstanding service to the operator’s community over a period of years. The recipient shall be a current WCA member and in good standing.
The recipient’s contribution may have been in the area of raising money for a local or national charity, or for community involvement that promotes commercial car washing. His or her efforts should have been contributed on a continuous ongoing basis to the dedication of serving his/her community.
JOHN M. SHEA AWARD: This award was established in conjunction with the Shea Family as a tribute to John M. Shea, a pioneer in the Car Wash Industry. This award recognizes an individual who represents excellence in full service car washing and shows an outstanding ability and dedication to the industry. The John M. Shea award criteria are based upon the following categories: Full Service car washing operating excellence, clean facility, uniformed employees, creativity, quality of customer service and the finished product, and landscape integration that enhances the building structure and the customer experience.
The recipient of the John M. Shea award will receive an engraved recognition plaque and a $1000 cash award to be donated to a charity of the recipient’s choice. The charity must be a well known, fully accredited and a certified non-profit agency registered with the State Department of non-profit charities.
