Kimberly Berg, Citrus Heights Car Wash

How long have you been in the car wash industry? How did you first get involved?

My husband and I purchased a run-down car wash in 2003. We had researched many different kinds of businesses, including laundromats, self-storage facilities and car washes. We wanted a business that didn’t require all-day attention, which we could run with few or no employees, and where we owned the land.

Tell us about your business.

My car wash was built in 1982 on a busy corner in Citrus Heights, California. It's a 5-bay self-service car wash. It's open 24 hours. We accept paper bills and credit & debit cards, and dispense ONLY $1 tokens. As a goodwill gesture, we absorb the credit card fee. 5 dual-motor vacuums 10 vending machines, including stand-alone Carpet Shampooer & Spray Fragrance machine.

What do you enjoy most about working in the car wash industry?

I enjoy the unpredictability and variety of each day. No two days are EVER the same! I love to talk with my customers and be of service. As I go about my chores, I like to greet my customers with a big smile, welcome them to my car wash, ask them how their day is going, and answer any questions they may have. Every day is an opportunity to make a positive impact and let them know that I really care about them. One of my favorite quotes is from Maya Angelou: “People don’t always remember what you say or do, but they will always remember how you made them feel.”

What challenges do you see facing the industry in years to come?

I’m concerned about how climate change is creating extreme swings in our weather patterns and how it could impact our industry in the years to come. Extreme changes such as drought, flooding, freezing and increasing temperatures. Weather extremes already affect my business, as customers don’t like to be outside and washing their vehicle if it’s too hot, too cold, too wet, too windy, or too smoky (from forest fires).

What do you like to do for fun in your spare time?

When I’m not working at my car wash, you can find me relaxing in my garden at home, enjoying calm and quiet time, tending to my grape vines or playing around with my miniature plants in my miniature garden.
